We went in for our first appointment on Thursday, February 19th and found out we are doubly blessed - we are having twins!!!
The doctor was doing the ultrasound and said..."there's a heartbeat"...and then said right away, "and there's another". I started to laugh and cry while Pete was staring at the monitor, shocked. The doctor began to laugh too. Pete, not knowing if this was a joke he wasn't getting, asked the doctor, "seriously, are there two?" and she had me calm down, lie back down and showed us how there were two perfect heartbeats.
Both babies are in their own sacks with their own placenta. The doctor explained this is very good because they both will be getting equal nutrients.
Both are healthy and thriving. Our next appointment is on March 19th. We'll have another ultrasound then. With a single pregnancy the doctor usually only orders about two ultrasounds, but because we are considered "high risk", we'll be fortunate to see our babies once a month - getting ultrasounds at each appointment. We'll be sure to post them for your viewing pleasure so you can watch them grow!
We realized this past weekend some strange coincidences regarding twins prior to our finding out that we were having twins!
1. Whenever we referred to having a baby - even before we decided to try for one - we always did so in the plural, as in "we're going to have babies"...
2. When we returned from our cruise, Pete went away on business to Chicago. I was home one night alone and was thinking that I was for sure pregnant...and not only was I pregnant, but I was having twins. I had this flash of WOW, could it be? And then convinced myself I was crazy and I never told anyone about it.
3. When we found out we were expecting, Pete bought me two dozen roses! Two!
4. The weeks prior to our doctor appointment, even the night before, we kept joking around with each other about having twins, if we are having twins, etc.
5. The week prior to our doctor appointment our carton of eggs contained 4 twin eggs!!! I remember we were baking and cooking with them and kept remarking to each other "my goodness, another twin"...It wasn't until a couple days after our appointment and learning that we were having twins that we pulled out the egg carton again - and realized this!
